The Other Half

Romantasy Romance Fantasy Drama Mystery

Rivenna is a city of two banks and one bridge, and for four generations the houses of Knell and Quill have hated each other across the water. Mirre of the Margin, daughter of a fallen branch, has learned to be invisible: by day in the Great Archive, and by night in the margins of her grimoire, where she writes down what she would never say aloud. Until one night the ink writes back. Now she is her house's candidate in the trial that divides the city, facing the golden heir from the other side, while the stranger in her book becomes, each night, someone she is not allowed to know. In a city where words are power, the truth is most dangerous the moment you finally dare to speak it.

yearning and dark, tender beneath the armor

From a session

The house is asleep, the city is asleep, and I write my anger in the margin the way other people curse: inaudibly. Tonight I wrote his name there too. I was already half scratching it out when the page grew warm beneath my hand, and in a hand that is not mine a single line appeared below my words. I should report it. I should close the book. Instead I move the candle closer, and I read it again.

From the writer

I wanted to write a love story in which the city itself is the antagonist: two banks, one bridge, and four generations who know exactly what they hold against each other. Every letter in this adventure has been written and rewritten, because whoever writes leaves something of themselves behind. Read them slowly. Not everyone in Rivenna says what they mean, and the most beautiful thing usually goes unsaid.
