Frostbound

The winter court takes one soul from her village each generation, and this year the tithe is her sister. So the hunter goes in her place, a knife hidden in her furs and murder in her heart, ready to end the heir who rules the frost. But the bite meant to bind her as a servant wakes something older, a marque that tethers her senses to his, and now she feels every cruelty and every restraint of the one man she swore to kill. The court calls the bond forbidden. The old guard calls for her death. And the longer she lingers in his cold halls, the harder it becomes to remember which of them is the prey.

gothic and cold, a feral slow-burn, always fade-to-black

From a session

The heir does not look up from the fire when you enter, and that is your chance. You measure
the distance to his back, the give of the knife against your palm, the three silent steps it
would take. You steady your hand and move. The floor betrays you, a breath of sound, no more,
but he is already turning, and the marque flares white-hot behind your ribs before the blade
is even level. He catches your wrist without effort. "Not yet," he says, almost gently, as if
he felt you decide. And the worst of it is that he did.

From the writer

Frostbound began with a single image: a hunter walking willingly through the gates of the thing she came to kill, and the cold that follows her in. I wrote the winter court the way you would write a held breath, every hall a little colder than the last, and I rewrote the space between these two more times than I will admit, until the wanting felt earned rather than given. Take the slow nights. Let the frost get under your skin. And be careful what you are so sure you hate.
