The Dread Vow

by Marguerite Voss

Romantasy Romance Dark fantasy
4.8 · 5 reviews

Once every seven years, the kingdom of Vaelmourn hands one woman to the thing it fears most: the masked, ageless figure the realm calls the Dread Lord of Ashcrown, said to be fed a bride so he does not break his cage and devour them all. Thea Hallow is a healer, not a sacrifice, and when the Choosing marks a frightened young mother in her care, she claims the vow-brand for herself rather than let it fall on a woman who has already survived enough. She expects a monster. She gets a man who says four words to the first courtier who dares lay a hand on her, touch her and die, and means every one of them. The vow will not let her leave his walls. It may not let her leave his heart either. And the longer she stays, the more she starts to suspect that everything her kingdom taught her to fear about him was a lie somebody else needed her to believe.

gothic, obsessive and tender beneath its dread, a slow-burn between a healer and the monster she was vowed to, always fade-to-black

From a session

Ser Tobias's fingers close hard enough around your wrist to bruise, dragging you back a step for
daring to speak out of turn, and you have half a breath to decide whether to flinch or to hold his
eyes instead. You hold them. Somewhere behind you, a chair scrapes back too fast to be anything
but temper. "Renner." Just the name, quiet as a blade leaving its sheath. Tobias lets go so fast
he nearly stumbles. He does not look at you again for the rest of the night, and neither, you
notice, does anyone else.

From the writer

I wanted to write the kind of monster you are told about before you are old enough to ask questions, the kind whose name mothers use to keep children indoors. Ashcrown started with a single question: what if everyone was right that he was dangerous, and wrong about everything else. I spent more drafts than I will admit deciding how a man who has been called a monster for three hundred years actually talks when he thinks no one is listening, and how a healer who has spent her life patching up what fear does to people would look at him instead of the mask. Bring your steadiest hands. You will need them.
